What is UP 2007

Have you ever given any thought as to what UP means?  Well, I read an article about UP recently and, of course, I went on my own search.  Look up UP in the dictionary and see just how much space it takes UP. In my old Webster Dictionary it takes UP almost a whole column.

Folks who know anything about Sand Mountain know that the word mountain is really a misnomer, as this is a plateau rather than a mountain.  Anyway we use mountain terms. If we are driving Up to Sylvania, Henagar or Ider (for those of you who don’t know, these little towns are north of Geraldine), we say we are going UP the mountain. Now when I lived in Georgia and would use that term those people visualized me going UP a steep incline and this term “UP” had to be explained.

It is believed by some that this two-letter word UP has more meanings than any other two-letter word.  I’ve tried to come UP with some ways we use the word UP around the farm, such as:

We wake UP and get UP about the same time every morning.  However, sometimes we lay UP in the bed ’til daylight.  If we stay UP late at night, we don’t get UP as early.

We try to come UP with enough money to pay the bills UP.

Now and then we look outside and see company driving UP.  John just left — going UP to Geraldine to visit a sick friend.

I have not made UP the bed yet — and I may not make it UP today.

We say people who are having a hard time making ends meet are UP against it.

I looked UP a telephone number so I could call UP a friend.

Recently when I was sick I threw UP.

John has a short fuse (in case you did not know) and he often blows UP.

We try to get dressed UP when we’re going out.

I don’t know what it’ll be, but it’s my job to stir UP something for lunch.  Sometimes when I try to cook something, I mess UP and it doesn’t come out so well.  Guess I could cut UP some meat to cook or if I dress a chicken I’ll have to cut it UP.

I’ll probably scavenger around in the refrigerator and warm UP some leftovers if there are any left — but we might have eaten them all UP.

John cranked UP the tractor when he was going to plow UP the garden.  He used to hitch UP the mule to do that, but now times have changed.

He raked UP leaves in the front hosta bed, then loaded them UP and hauled them UP the road.  Some people burn Up their leaves, but we compost ours.

The corn is UP in the garden and we have winter onions that need pulling UP.

The lawn mower has a flat tire — it needs repairing and pumping UP.

A few years ago we had a grease fire in the kitchen and it smoked UP the house.  Then the painting we had done brightened UP the room.

So many chores need to be done here — clothes in the dryer need folding UP and the dishwasher needs to be unloaded and the dishes put UP.  I really need to clean UP the house, but I think I’ll go down to the workroom and sew UP some of those scraps into a quilt.  And we have lots of weeds that need pulling UP.

I’d like to put UP (put it in the frame ) a quilt but there is not enough time to do it all.

If John doesn’t wind the clocks UP they’ll stop running and he recently had to run them UP when we changed to Daylight Saving Time.

We had relatives visit recently and they had the sweetest little girl — it had been a while since I had picked a baby UP.

We know a man who is really UP on computers (I know how to turn mine off and on).

Our neighbor has laying hens and they have to  pick UP eggs.

As I’ve told you before, I want a new car, but John is opposed, he is just going to keep this old one fixed UP.

He had to open UP the drain at the sink because it was stopped UP.

We sometimes go UP (Fort Payne) to Wal-Mart, but we lock UP before we drive UP there.

It finally clouded UP and rained, but before that things were drying UP.

At this writing, the sky has cleared UP and the plants appear to be peertened UP.

If you’re UP to it, why don’t you try to make UP a list of the different ways UP is used?

It’ll take UP a lot of your time, and you may wind UP with a jillion ways if you don’t give UP.

I’ll bet you can think UP more ways to use UP than I’ve listed. I could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP for now as my space is used UP.

I’ll just shut UP and get on with country living.
