Aunt Bill Rambles about quilts

Well, I didn’t know what in the world I’d tell y’all about today and I ast Billie if I could talk about one of her quilts.  She’s got a bunch of ’em and has give a bunch away, too.  One quilt of hers that I lack is called Charm quilt and hit won some kind of prize at a quilt show in Georgie.  It seems to me hit wuz at the East Cobb Quilt Guild Show and the prize was called Viewer’s Choice.  Hit has got lots and lots of little pieces (pieces are cut in the shape of a casket) and no two pieces is cut from the goods (material).  Hit’s also got a sack lining and I lack that part real well.

That reminds me of old times and I guess that’s the reason I lack hit so well.  One time Billie went to some big quilt show up in Kentuckie and she brought two women home with her and they wuz from Holland.  Hit was two women she met when she went over there with a bunch of quilters.  They wuz nice ladies and had had some course on color.  They laid this quilt out on Billie’s work table and she picked hit up piece by piece and sewed them little pieces together in rows and then connected the rows.  Hit was a tedious job and then she put a border around it.

Now I remember about this kind of quilt when I wuz young.  Hit was called Odd Fellow and the pattern piece was cut in the shape of a double bitted axe.  Back then hit wuz hard to find lots of different material to cut from.so women would keep that pattern in their pocketbook and when they wuz visiting another house they would ast if they could cut a few pieces from that quilters stash of stuff.  Back then lots of the pieces wuz cut from feed sacks — then feed sacks wuz so purty and they would wash and arn good.  My dresses wuz made out’n feed sacks.  I could get my little girl a dress out’n one sack and she had a closet full.  I can jist see them fresh-arned little dresses hanging there and ever one had a sash.  I don’t see sashes on little girls lack I used to, but anyway this is country living.
