Aunt Bill Rambles
Lord have mercy, this garden is a-working us to death. You ain’t never seen so much “stuff” in your life. Y, you would think me and JW wuz a-gonna raise a big family.
I’s jist settin’ here a-shellin’ peas and I got to thinkin’ about young folks. They don’t know nothing about workin’ lack us old folks do. What if’n bad times set in? Maybe lack the Depression many years ago and we didn’t have cell phones, computers and maybe not even electricity. What in the world would we all do — but especially them folks that don’t know livin’ without all that fancy stuff.
My girls ain’t got a clue about how to live without all that stuff. You see, they’s always lived in the big city and they’re living in the fast lane. Them two girls is career women and don’t know nothing about country living lack we know here on The Windy Knoll.
I didn’t raise nairy one of ’em to be a housekeeper. One time I got onto the youngest about her house and she was quick to tell me she was a scholar — not a housekeeper. Guess that put me in my place, huh. I ain’t said nothing else about it.
Now the oldest un has loved her high school sweetheart ever since 1964 and would you believe last year they’ve got married? Afore they’s married I told this man that she don’t cook and she don’t clean. He said back to me, “That’s gonna change.” Yoohoo! I see’d right quick he didn’t know this woman as well as he thought he did. Hit ain’t changed none neither.
Well, I need to get off’n this machine there’s more peas to shell and more okry to put up in freezer bags. I told JW to jist run the lawn mower over the garden, but instead of that he’s a-puttin’ out winter onions and a-gittin’ ready to plant the turnip patch. The almanac says Sept. 2 is the right time to plant root crops and that’s when he’ll plant turnips. There’s no rest for the weary and the wicked want none.!!
Saying for the day: Man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.

Aunt Bill, again I enjoyed hearing your thoughts related to days and methods now gone. But it seems we get to have the best of both worlds -skills/food prep methods retained from the old days and the technology and conveniences of today. And I suspect you are like myself and continue with the gardening due to sheer pleasure. There are few things more pleasurable than getting hands and heart into the soil and harvesting its bounty. God’s creation is ‘bountiful’!!!
