About our Cat
We have two male cats who have been neutered and they are precious. They’re litter mates and get along with well with each and also with Sister, the dog. In the beginning their names were Tom and Jerry — quite original don’t you think? As they got older, Tom insisted that he sleep on the back of the sofa — not on the seat part. He would stay for hours on end up high on the back and propped against the wall. I kept calling him “Couch Potato” and eventually changed his name to Spud. They spend the nights in the barn except when it’s super cold (when they sleep in the basement) and they’re always at the back door when John gets up. Last Friday Jerry was not there and John worried and worried about him and walked all over the place calling and hunting. He was afraid he had been run over and even walked up the road — no Jerry. The vet has told us sometimes they would roam even though they had been neutered and I kept telling him Jerry might have gone womanizing — even though all he had to offer was best wishes. All day we watched for him and just before dusk he came in. I was standing near his feeding place when he arrived and he was literally scared to death — couldn’t even take a bite without jumping and looking around. He did not eat enough and went to the basement door and asked to go down. I opened the door, he went down and the next day he only came upstairs to eat and would turn and go back down. He slowly started staying upstairs a little longer, but was slow to let us pet him and was very jumpy. For three days he would not go outside and before that he loved being outside and he was our bird hunter. Today is Thursday and it’s sunshiny outside, but Jerry is in the basement (his own choosing) where it’s darker and quiet. He only stays outside for short periods. When he’s up here he jumps and is edgy when we make noise stacking dishes or whatever. We can’t imagine what happened. Someone said maybe coyotes got after him and he had to climb a tree — we’ll never know, but we sure would like to have the old Jerry back. This, too, is country living.
