A Windy Knoll Report

2013-1672-301It’s my intention to keep this blog positive, but today is different.  First off last week John took the tiller to the repair shop.  The bill was $68.00 and he picked it up yesterday.  In unloading it it feel off the ramps breaking the carburetor — well he tried to patch that up with baling wire (just like it would have been done in Depression days).  Duh!!  Today was the last day this month to plant above ground crops (according to the almanac) and we wanted to plant peas — he tried to use the crippled tiller.  You can guess the rest of the story.  Now it has to go back to the shop and the part alone is $86.00 to say nothing of the labor.  It’s impossible to make John believe he is no longer forty years old — in December he’ll be 89.  Wow.  Next expense — we’ve had the air-conditioning repairman here today  and now we’re waiting for the plumber.  When it rains it pours.  A lady told me, when I was younger, that life’s just one damn thing after another and I believe that’s true.

There are a few good things though — he managed to get the pea seed in the ground.  Maybe soon we’ll get the rows laid off for the sweet potato plants.  And another thing — John brought in the first ripe tomato — although its very small — it’s a Roma.  When he handed it to me I was reminded of the cold winter day we planted the seed — we wound up nursing 90 baby tomato plants and when the time came we gave plants to anybody that would have them.

Whew!  This, too, is country living.
