A Windy Knoll Report
Whew! This small garden we have is in full swing. Yesterday John brought in okra to be worked and today he brought a peck bucket of bell peppers and another peck bucket of tomatoes. I’m considering leaving here ’til we have a frost. We are too old to do all this, but. . . . . I have 12 peppers ready for the food processor — I’ll need that many when I make pepper relish and we’re out. The rest I’m trying to give away. I told John when he brought them in we could have a pepper battle!
Our cucumber crop is a disaster! We used seed somebody else ordered us and that was a mistake. These cukes are to cucumbers what citron is to watermelon. They are short and squatty and have absolutely no taste. I wanted to make a gallon of pickles — but not with these!
And another thing, grass is about to take the garden over. We got the tiller out of the shop yesterday, but the tiller operator is 88 years old which causes some problems. We can think of more things to do than we can get done. Now the weed eater is on the blink. You know, I don’t believe there has been one day since we’ve lived here at the home place that all our equipment was in good repair at the same time. It’s so frustrating.
Our cats have it made — they don’t have to work — their food is ready when they are, plus they lay up and sleep all day. I guess they roam all night as they stay outside. Spud naps on my four-wheeler (the walker) while Jerry sleeps on the sun porch. What a life!!
I’ve always heard “There’s no rest for the weary and the wicked want none.” That fits our situation to a tee. I hope next writing I can be more positive, but is the way it is with our country living.
