A Windy Knoll Report

Remember twenty days ago I started feeding the brandied fruit in preparation of baking a Friendship Cake?  Well, today is the 20th day and feeding day, as well.  The brew starts with starter, peaches and sugar and after ten days we added more sugar and pineapple chunks.  Today we added two small cans of cherries and two cups of sugar — wait ten more days and it’s baking day.  Wow!  Three cakes at one baking.  The fermenting is getting just right — we argue about who will get to do the stirring so we can lick the spoon!!

It’s another busy day here.  John furnishes a friend sawdust and the friend grows sweet potato slips (plants) for us and today is the day.  As you already know the tiller has been in the shop, but now its home so the work begins.  First John makes a little mound (what we call a hill) for each row of  slips — this is after fertilizer has been spread, next with a hoe the holes are dug, following this a cup or two of water goes in each hole, then the slips are dropped in and dirt added around each.  It quite a process, but we enjoy this variety best of all.  Wish I could tell you what it is, but  I can’t spell it and can’t find it anywhere.!!  Honest confession is good for the soul!!

There’s no rest for the weary and the wicked want none!!  At least that’s the way it is around the Windy Knoll with this style of country living.
