A Morning Visitor

Guest writer: Beth Littlejohn

image37-001Mother would say that it was early of a morning when I arose yesterday.  The sun was just beginning to make an appearance. The world was still and quiet. Suddenly, I heard a whirring sound and began to hunt for the origins of the racket.  In the flowers, pictured here was a ruby-throated humming bird!

DSCN0036-001He was strutting his stuff. The way the sun shone on is chest made his ruby throat seem ablaze. What a miraculous creature, wings moving so quickly that he stands still to drunk from the flowers.

In readings I have done about hummingbirds, I have found that the ruby-throated hummer is the only hummingbird that spends summers in the eastern United States. The distinctive whirring sound is caused by the speed of their wings-53 beats per second. This is fast enough for them to hover and even fly backward. I also discovered that their feet are too small for them to hop or walk, but their feet can be used to scoot along on a branch.

God’s beauty is here for us to appreciate and enjoy, just stand and be calm!  As you go on your way today, take time to share this wonderful brand of country living!

Thank you Beth. I also, love the hummingbirds. We had several earlier in the spring, but of late, see only one occasionally. I do have 3 feeders, so hopefully, there are more visitors than I see.

Perhaps the gorgeous hummingbirds have gone to nest & will be back to your feeders soon.
