I too still own an iron and do keep it handy in the sewing room. But I do not miss having to iron everything. I married an military man and way back when, the uniforms had to be starched to a degree that they would stand alone when ironed. Have to admit, I never could do them correctly so hired am ironing
lady who did a fantastic job. Never regretted spending the money even if it meant we ate beans a couple times each week, rather than once.

Love all your post….takes me back, if only for awhile.
If anyone still irons alot, they should buy a T-Fal iron, it has a glass type bottom….it’s like ironing on glass ….justs slides across fabric, well worth the 38 dollars or so.

I do remember having a new baby and would wash a load of diapers at night and then then next morning before work would trek to the cloth-line to hang the diapers out for the day. They would fold so very nicely when they were dry. Also, I still miss having sheets hung on the cloths line as they were so nicely shaped and smelled so very fresh. Seems the dryers always leave them a bit wrinkled and the top edge is always folded strangely. Closest I get to them today is staying at the Hyatt and getting the lightly starched and pressed sheets. I mostly just use the 400 thread count perma-pressed sheets and try my best to smooth them out. I just do not have time nor energy to iron sheets although I would dearly love to have them that way. My granddaughter, Britnee, told her adoptive mother that I did not own an iron. I do have one but it very seldom comes off the shelf. Mother would many times ask me to press a couple of Daddy’s shirts that she wanted to love a “little better than common” (this is one of her expressions you will note) for him to wear to church on Sundays.
When I was young girl I can remember having to iron daddy’s undershirts and handkerchiefs and starched shirts. They do look pretty after being starched and sprinkled and put in the refrigerator for a while, then ironed and hung in a neat row. I can just see them now all crisp and neat.
Ha! Evidently I cannot spell starched as it throws me into spell-check every time I type that word. Just have to laugh.
