Gravedigging

Saturday afternoon, in the heat of the day, I began thinking of the man I knew as Uncle Wesley. I asked Daddy where he was buried and lived and off we went to that area.

IMG_1267Daddy said that Uncle Wesley Crumly lived in the Lusk Chapel community, just north of Geraldine. As we rode, he pointed out the house, newly renovated, where Wesley had lived with two different wives, not at the same time, of course!

We continued and he pointed out a church identified as Flat Rock XXX Church (I did not note the denomination). Daddy said that Lusk Chapel had been ther; I kept driving as I did not remember the church looking imagelike that. Soon I was headed down Sand Mountain and decided to go back.

We discussed where the church we were looking for was located. Daddy said he did not know about the church, but the grave yard was back beyond the Flat Rock Church. I turned in and headed toward the cemetery. Sure enough as I turned in ther was a sign for Lusk Chapel United Methodist Church.

imageWe walked and walked but never did find Uncle Wesley’s grave but there were other Crumlys buried there.  Daddy showed me his baby sister’s, Hazel Ruth, grave. There was also a grave for a baby boy which was born dead. I had never known of this child.

Also, John Henry and Ella Crumly are buried at Lusk Chapel. There are also more connects in the Goodrich line, but I won’t belabor this line at this time.

After an afternoon of grave digging, we went to Rainesville for an ice cream. It was a great day with my daddy.

Hunting ancestors is a favorite part of my variety of country living.

Thanks Cathy. I have given Daddy homework to locate the grave in the Skirum Cemetery!
