Sights and Sounds of the Country from a City Prospective

Guest writer: Beth Littlejohn

As I visit and help out here at my parent’s home I am drawn to a morning walk down the dirt road in front of their house. While I am working as a school teacher, in Covington, GA, I don’t have the time, or should I say take the time, for a morning walk. But here, in the peace of this rural setting, I make time for a walk down the road.

I don’t get down the road very far until I notice that I have a companion. Sister, the dog, is with me and is just a happy as she can be-sniffing first one thing and then the other. Sister is great company – she is quiet and attentive.

The first thing that I noticed is the quiet.  In my suburban neighborhood there are so many city noises – cars, dogs, people, and buses.  But here, on the Windy Knoll, it is quiet!  Wait, no it is not quiet at all.  I can here cars in the distance, but that is almost nonexistent.  But the birds!  There are so many sounds of different birds.  I have seen mockingbirds, blue jays, and cardinals lately, so I presume that those are some of the birds that I hear.  The tweeting all around me lulls me into a thoughtful place.  This is a great time for my morning prayers and communion with God.

The beauty is also different.  Yes, we have blooming plants in my area but these are different!  The trillium in the garden outside the sun porch are blooming and I have pictures for you.  Mother would know all the names but I don’t.  The columbine is strutting its stuff too.  The grancy gray beard (not sure how to spell this) is beautiful but is not yet in full bloom.  I wish everyone could appreciate and enjoy this beauty.

City living — sights and sounds– are very different from this style of country living.
