Knitting: A Fun Hobby

With the cold winter days ahead what better thing to do than knit.  I have a good friend who guided me through the buying of a new laptop and he said, “When you get this you’ll lay the knitting down!”  Well, he doesn’t know me very well.  I hate the thought of a day passing that needle doesn’t meet the yarn here at the Windy Knoll.

Scarves are so easy to do and there’s no telling how many I’ve made in the last few years.  I have a friend who is in the seventh grade and she’ll wear anything I knit.  Then there’s our daughter, who lives in Conyers, Georgia and  loves travelling to Madison to visit an upscale knit shop called Sartoia Monica (www.sartoioamonica.com)  and, of course, purchasing yarn and sending it to me with instructions.  Last year I knitted the Boa in the picture (it first has to be knitted and then a series of knots have to be tied) with the understanding that Daughter would tie the knots.  This interesting yarn came from Sartoia Monica and as I understand it, Daughter has been to Madison again and I have more yarn on the way.

I have a closet full of scrap yarn, but it isn’t good quality — for the most part and I don’t live close enough to visit shops anymore.  In that case, I can while away the hours using whatever is available.

Lots of the scarves I’ve made were knitted on size 13 needles — see the picture.  They were regular needles — I broke one and was devastated.  Well, The One I Love Best cut the other needle off and repaired the broken one.  These are my very favorites.  I’ve just made several scarves using a garter stitch (knit every row) on the 13’s and my seventh-grade friend just loves them.  The white one the picture is an example — of course, the scarf can be made any width and length.

The Infinities are knitted with stockinet stitch (knit one row, purl one row) which makes them roll – or curl up on the sides. I knit them 60 inches long and then sew the ends together.  This way they are doubled when worn.

Knitting is definitely a good pass time in this slow-paced country living.
