Filet Crochet

According to what I read when I Googled — filet crochet is a gridlike work using only two stitches — double crochet and chain stitch.  I disagree — the crocheted piece you see in the picture has chain, double crochet, treble crochet, single crochet and slip stitch.  Before one begins it’s important to know how many spaces will be needed for the word and then embellishments can be added at the end.   Overall space count is super important.  I recently crocheted Lewis for a friend to give as a wedding gift.

Filet Crochet

Since I started doing this some years back, I’ve crocheted over 1,000 of these names — they make nice wedding gifts or whatever.  My preference of thread is size 20 and I use a size 10 steel crochet hook. One can do filet crochet making whatever by using a grid.  Over our fireplace hangs “Home Sweet Home” and Welcome is another common word asked for.  If I’m doing a long name such as Littlejohn I would crochet it up and down instead of crosswise.

In the 1980’s I published a filet crochet book (even though my name was misspelled) where I showed grids for hearts, houses, sayings and fowl.  Edgings can be made up to suit the crocheter. Needlework — a fun part of country living.
