Knitted Ear Warmers

The First Baptist Church of Geraldine, of which I am the only living charter member, has a bazaar every year.  Last year I donated some tatted Christmas things; however, I didn’t realize it was so close at hand until I was called yesterday and reminded.  Then my mind started spinning about what I could make on such a short notice — November 2 is the date.  Wow!!  Too late to do much tatting, so I opted to knit.

Last winter I saw a crocheted ear warmer and in my mind I converted the ear warmer to knitting.  Without a pattern and just going by guess work, I made several and gave them away.  Apparently, they were okay, but my friend (?) asked me to do her another with less stitches.  In making these for the bazaar I’m using a circular needle,size 6, needle and cast on sometimes 76 stitches — but then I decrease the stitches for some and increase on others.  It is my belief that the ones I’m donating will be for children since I was called on to reduce stitches for the adult one last year.   Most times I do just plain ribbing — knit two, purl two — and because the needle is circular when I make the first round I put the first stitch cast on over on the point where the last stitch is and knit them together.  With this done I’m knitting in the round and there’ll be no seam in the warmer.  I bind off at about 3  to 3 1/2 inches wide.  Sometimes I knit three and purl two and this makes the look a little different.  Then what to do from that is up to the maker.  Sometimes I crochet a little flower and attach to the warmer, which is to be worn turned slightly to the side.  I can put a button in place of the flower and at other times I just squeeze the warmer and wrap yarn — this makes a very plain one, but still pretty.  I’ll show you some I’ve made — now remember I’m no photographer and I’m not computer savvy, but anyway it’s country living.
