Aunt Bill Rambles — Dirt Road

You ain’t never seen sich a mess in all yore life!!  Them road graders come through here and they don’t seem to know nothing about working a road.  The right way — according to my daddy who worked for the road commissioner in the 1930’s — is to have the middle higher than the sides.  That way the water can run off to the ditches.  They ain’t no way the water can get to the ditch on this road — they’s a pile of dirt along the ditch — that way the water has to either stand or run down the middle of the road.  They rake a pile to this side this time and next time they come through they move the pile to the other side.  Whew!!

Last week them blankety-blankety machines came through and left a pile along the side that was two feet high in some places.  Cars couldn’t even meet each other in some places and, of course, I called and complained — now they’ve come back and made the pile a little shorter.  What in the world do your reckin we’re supposed to do?

In some places dirt is piled in the ditch and there ain’t no way the water can run down the ditch!!  Somebody told me if I didn’t quit complaining those folks would plow a ditch right down the middle of my road!!  And so??

We got a new commissioner last election and I called and told him he got my vote and now I wanted his help.  He sent the graders back, but the job ain’t no where near satisfactory.  They’ve paved all of County Rd. 104, but this quarter of a mile section!!  I’m glad they didn’t pave hit ’cause traffic runs down this road just lack they’s on a interstate road.  We’ve got one guinea left and I expect somebody’ll run over him (or her).

And now you know about one of the complaints of country living!!
