Onions Make Us Cry

John With Onions

John With Onions

Making us cry is not for the reason you might think.  Last August John put out winter onions in the garden — he got carried away and put out too many.  Of course, family members and others enjoyed pulling them up and eating the tiny little things in cold weather and they were pretty growing.  However, now it’s a different story — they are in full bloom and it’s passed time to have them out of the ground.  Week before last John shoveled up quite a few and on Sunday took them to church giving onions to everybody that would take them.  Funny thing though he offered freshly dug onions to a friend (who loves them) and she wouldn’t take them.  Duh!  She’ll be thrilled to get onions when I clean them and hand them over.  One time we dug new potatoes and shared with our eldest.  Later she said the potatoes she got at Harry’s Market didn’t have dirt on them.  I very quickly replied, “That’s just the place for you to get your new potatoes then.”

Today John tackles the job of taking up onions again and, hopefully, can finish the job; however, we older people have stop and rest often.  Such is gardening and country living.

Note: I’m in the process of checking into having book #1 reprinted; however, there are a few #2 books available.  Price is $10.00, plus $3.50 shipping.
