Aunt Bill Rambles

Well, I’ve had a good thing happen to me this week.  Some woman called and wanted to talk about quilts — lordy, I can talk about quilts as long as anybody’ll set and listen.  This woman must have had lots of time because we talked and talked.  I shore do like to talk about quilts and  tell stories — one right after another.

This woman and some of her folks is planning a quilt exhibit and wants me and Billie to come down there and tell stories and show some quilts.  We can’t wait!

Me and Billie used to do a quilt program called “Southern Quilting — How it Use to Be” and we travelled all over the south.  One time we wuz in Niceville, Florida doing sich as this and Billie pulled a old fertilizer-lined quilt out’n a sack and you ain’t never heerd the like in yore life — Y, you’d a thought she was showing a expensive piece of art the way them women was a-carrying on. When I growed up this was the only quilts we know’d about.  It shore wadn’t nothing special to me. It was jest kivver.

Farm women used lots of sacks in their quilts. Back then sugar, salt, flour, cow feed and fertilizer all come in sacks and they’s  good fer making a quilt.  One time we wuz doing this program in Cartersville, Georgie and we’s a-talking about how women used to make drawers out’n flour sacks ’cause they wuz softer and not so scratchy.  One women told us that her ma made her drawers outta flour sacks and on the bottom it said “Southern Best.”

I tell you I’ve heerd lots of yarns about quilts, but some I can’t talk about in mixed company. Later  I’ll be a-tellin’ you about the quilt exhibit in hopes you can come set a while.
